A visit to France, a last minute booking to try a new experience in Spain and strangers in town.
Deja Vu Part 3??
Regular readers know that we are members of Seaton & District Town Twinning and it was our turn to visit Thury Harcourt in Normandy. A group of 27 headed to Portsmouth to travel as foot passengers on Brittany Ferries and we were welcomed by our hosts in Caen who transported us to Thury Harcourt arriving very late the same evening.
We have developed a strong friendship with our hosts Chantal & Jean Philippe so we quickly felt at ease and of course the really good red wines & calvados were soon flowing. The next day was spent en famille relaxing with our hosts followed by a group buffet dinner with a welcome speech from the new Mayor of Thury Harcourt in the civic centre.
Next day was a full day out starting with a boat cruise through the marshes with a stop for lunch before the heavens opened. Cheryl’s timing was not good and she got soaked. Next stop was to a toffee factory and gift shop where a hand drier was utilised for a much needed dry off – and those yoga/pilates classes came in handy as it was a bit of a stretch to get her jeans dry! The day ended with dinner at a local microbrewery.
Last day and we travelled to the coast for a nature walk follwed by lunch with our hosts at their holiday chalet before saying our goodbyes as we boarded the ferry home.

One Step Beyond
We had a gap in the calendar and Neil wanted to fill it. Time to try something new, a walking holiday with SAGA. What????? really, are we that old? – well yes, in fact you only have to be fifty to go on holiday so we were well qualified. Anyhow, despite the wrinkly connotations, SAGA did have a very appealing included extra – a taxi from your house to and from the airport, which is a real bonus for us. This holiday was based in Calpe in Spain and also included five guided walks in the area.
We met a few of the group the first night before we had a formal introduction and the first walk to Calpe rock and into the Old Town. Other walks through the week started with a bus ride out into the nearby hills and ranged in difficulty although none were too strenuous and the group bonded well. Evenings were fun as we were on an all inclusive basis and we had a lot of fun with our fellow walkers. The nightly entertainment was a bit hit and miss but overall we had a great time.

The walking was very good with our guides who were very knowledgeable. There were a couple of glitches with some itinerary changes and rainy days but overall the whole holiday was excellent. Arriving back into Gatwick our friendly driver was waiting for us – so much better and faster than using the train. A big thumbs up for SAGA.
There be strangers in town……
Seaton held its first ever Pirate Festival and you will not be surprised that we love any old excuse to put on a costume and mess about. The weather was fantastic, the town was packed and there was so much going on – parades, buskers, bands in the pubs, kids activities in the Gardens and a two live bands at The Gateway to finish.
After arriving in Singapore, we immediately flew to Borneo to revisit the wildlife we had seen before in our independent travel on a budget days. This time it was part of an organised tour with a greater level of comfort and with seamless transfers. We arrived two nights before the tour started to relax and explore Kota Kinabalu. It’s low key and relaxed with a pretty waterfront board walk lined with bars and restaurants.
Curry and happy hour………Neil’s happy place
In contrast with tour 1 (see last blog entry), our tour group this time consisted of just one other couple, Gail & Alan. The tour began with a very long day of sightseeing including a visit to Mt Kinabalu, Hot Springs and a dinner show in the evening.
Day 2 Tour took us to the city sights in KK, Mosques, Temples & Traditional long houses.
A trampoline in the communal area – what??Rice wine stores more warm rain
Day 3 and we flew to Sandakan to begin the wildlife part of the tour, starting with the Orangutan sanctuary and the nearby sun bears.
Finally we transferred to a boat for the journey to Abi Lodge on the Kinabatangan River where we had the first of our sunset river cruises and a night walk to spot wildlife in its natural setting.
Proboscis MonkeyFireflies
Day 4 started with a sunrise boat cruise to experience the sights and sounds as the jungle woke up. Breakfast back at the Lodge followed by a boat ride to our next base, Kinabatangan River Lodge. The sunset river cruise was a real highlight as the guides had reports of pygmy elephants feeding along the riverbank
Day 5 early cruise to an Oxbow lake followed by breakfast then a trip to Gomantong Caves where birds nests are harvested for the famous soup. Good news for you is that this blog does not capture the smells – there were a lot of bats, and a lot of smelly bat poo. Added to this the eagle eyed amongst you will spot the zillions cockroaches happily feeding on the poo! Gail was not impressed………but we thought the whole place was amazing and we had it all to ourselves.
The final river sunset cruise also brought a close encounter with a small group of macaques who really were not bothered in the slightest by our presence as they munched on their supper.
Day 6 Time to say goodbye to the river as we headed back to Sandakan and the flight back to KK for dinner by the waterfront.
We really enjoyed the tour and the company of Gail and Alan. Wildlife rarely disappoints, and this time was no exception. Orangutans, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, sun bears, more monkeys than you can imagine and birds of all sizes and colours. It was superb. Next morning we all headed for the airport and the flight to Singapore where we had a few nights before joining the cruise.
Our included hotel for the 2 nights in Singapore, The Holiday Inn Atrium, was charmless but in an extremely good location as we could easily walk to the river which was lined with bars and restaurants and was a pleasant way to walk towards the centre of town. We soon got used to the weather pattern of generally dry first thing followed by showers and hammering rain by the late afternoon.
Cruise 2 – Celebrity Eclipse
First impressions were good, slick onboarding process, the ships decor was tasteful, facilities were good, plenty of public space although it lacked the expanse of shade cover on the open deck dining area. Now, Neil is not known for his attention span and we were faced with 3, yes 3 whole days at sea before our first port in Bali. We wanted to revisit Bali so we felt the sea days would be worth it. Finally Neil was set free as we arrived in Benoa, Bali where we took a tour to Uluwatu Temple & GWK Cultural Park
Next Port Celukan Bawang in the North, and a part of Bali we had not visited on our previous travels. However, the weather really was against us, which turned out to be funny as everyone on the tour we booked found the stop at the viewpoint where all we could see was thick cloud was hilarious, everyone that was, apart from the guide who even asked if we wanted to get off the bus and take photos!
The lake viewpointlovely day for sightseeing
Two more days at sea followed…..but this did include crossing the equator and as we had experienced crossing the equator last November there was a fish kissing ceremony featuring Neptune and his crew.
This cruise then headed to Port Klang and this time we planned to meet up with our friend and former gym instructor Helena, however an incident on board meant the ship had to change course and the port was cancelled. Another sea day for Neil……….
Good weather returned in Penang, Malaysia. The ship docked in Georgetown and there was a Treetop Canopy walk using the Penang Funicular Railway.
Spot the lizardFamily posing for Chinese New Year
Last port stop was a return visit to Phuket and as we had already done the island tour we opted for a leisurely walk along the seafront followed by some shopping for Cheryl. One more sea day to go…..
Tough life on board
This trip hadn’t gone to plan, first the shocking weather, then the missed port stop. Now there was another little drama looming. Our return to Singapore and a flight home was booked for 3rd March, however this fact was not known to a certain individual on the other side of the world, and he went ahead with his plans to cause chaos in the Middle East which meant all flights, including our return via Abu Dhabi were not going to happen.
It soon became the topic of conversation on board and a WhatsApp group ‘Stranded’ was created which proved extremely useful as the actions taken by insurance companies and booking agents was very different. As we had bolted together two packages and wanted some time before each one started we had opted to book our flights independently so we knew we were on our own. What we didn’t know was what the flight operator, Ethihad, would do.
After a wasted day with 2 trips to the airport before realisation dawned that the only reliable way out was to rebook with an airline routing away from the Middle East. Neil found flights with China Air via Shanghai for 3 days later, booked a serviced apartment near the river location we had before and we were back in a Taxi heading for down town Singapore. Well there could be worse places to be stranded in the world.
Deja vu?……..back in Chiangi Airport again! It was so good to get on that plane
Before we go here’s the usual nonsense and a word from our cheapskate sponsors….
Another catch up post to update you on the start of the year. It’s cold, grey and drizzly in January and February so like migrating birds we took off for warmer climates.
Loyal readers will remember we started our travelling adventure back on 2008 with the classic backpacker route through South East Asia. It was time for a revisit to some of our favourite places but with a different budget and travelling style. After a bit of research we found two back to back group tours plus cruises with IGLU, an online agent we haven’t used before. As we were putting together two different packages we decided to book our own flights and extra hotel days needed to fill the small gaps.
Starting with Thailand, we arrived in Bangkok which is one of our favourites. To get into the time zone and to acclimatise to 30C+ we opted to go a few days early. This gave us time to enjoy the atmosphere, delicious Thai food and ride the river ferries along the Chao Praya in both directions. We finally ticked off two experiences we had always wanted to do, a crazy night at the Muay Thai Stadium and the fabulous show, The Ladyboys of Bangkok.
The tour began and we met our new chums for a welcome dinner at the hotel. The group was 20 in total and the tour took us around the main sights in Bangkok. We had a lot of fun getting to know the group and our scatty, irritating and very loud Thai Tour leader.
Grand Palace & Reclining Buddha at Wat PhoLongtail boat ride through the canals & Wat Saket
Jim Thomson House, watching the locals pose for their special occasion & social media at Wat Arun and rooftop bar cocktails overlooking the river.
Being with a tour meant a revisit to some places but added new experiences we wouldn’t have done. Bangkok done we headed East to The Bridge on The River Kwai and then to The Death Railway near Kanchanaburi. On the way we stopped off at the railway market where traders have set up their stall just inches from the tracks so that when a train is due into the station all the overhang shade canopies are quickly pulled in and everyone gets off the tracks and squeezes together either side to avoid being flattened. Our group had a reserved space at a cafe where we stood on benches just millimetres away from the train, so close we shook hands with the passengers who were also enjoying the madness and mayhem.
Next stop was to the floating market which had changed a lot since our first trip back in 2008. It was very commercialised and touristy and lacked the charm we experienced when we stayed locally to get an early morning boat ride when the locals use the market. It was here back in 2008 that we had the best ever Phad Thai from a lady who cooked it on her tiny boat. It was only after we had eaten it all and handed back the plate that we watched in horror as she washed it in the canal!
A full day ended with arriving at the bridge at sunset and then at our hotel which wasn’t quite as described in the itinerary but turned out ok.
Next morning began with the Bridge Museum and on to the The Death Railway where its possible to walk along the site of the tracks. We had been to the railway before, almost 20 years ago, but not too much had changed – it’s still a moving experience and makes you wonder how one human being can be so brutal and cruel to another human being.
The day ended with a visit to a new place for us, Erawan waterfalls, stunningly beautiful natural pools which are suitable for swimming in.
Last day of the tour we headed back to Bangkok via Ayutthaya a former capital of Thailand to walk amongst the atmospheric ruins.
The tour finished with a tuk tuk night tour to taste street food in chinatown.
Overall a good tour made extra special by the group who got on really well and provided a lot of laughs. Next morning we were taken to the port to get onboard Norwegian Sun for the second part of the holiday headed to various ports in Thailand and Malaysia before finishing in Singapore. We’d never used Norwegian Cruise lines or been to Koh Samui and Phuket in Thailand or Vang Vien in Vietnam so the trip was a good mix of new places and revisiting others.
First impressions of Norwegian were mixed, there was a huge well covered eating area at the stern of the ship which was needed as temperatures were very high at the start and the heavens opened as we approached Singapore. However the public areas were cramped and we encountered for the first time, a ship that allowed smoking indoors in the casino. This wouldn’t have been a problem if the casino had sealed doors and wasn’t a walkthrough to other public areas on that deck – yuk! Cheryl also discovered that the high impact dance based classes were held near the pool without shade and were unfortunately so dumbed down and short in duration to make them more frustrating than fun. However, our tour mates kept our spirits up and we all sat together for a big dinner together on the last night. We won’t be doing a Norwegian cruise again.
All needs covered…….fun teppanyaki chefhmm what does this remind me of?Neil enjoys the warm rain…………
The sightseeing in the port stops was good – here’s a roundup.

The ship finally docked in Singapore and we headed to the airport to begin the second cruise & tour booking, but you will have to wait for Part 2 to find out what happens next.
